Math Counts Foundation is a body set up in the United States by a group of sponsors such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Society of Professional Engineers, CAN Foundation, NASA, some other private companies. The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the schools in the United States and the Overseas American International Schools. The contest is open for the middle school students (grades 6, 7, and 8). The coaching and the contests strive to excite the students about math by providing fun and a challenging experience that rewards their effort and achievement, while teaching young adults to be problem solvers and develop their competitive spirit and teamwork skills. The coaching season typically begins at the start of each school year and the competition season begins in the winter when the students participate in the school level competition. Chapter (Regional) competition is conducted in February . Eight students are selected to represent the school in the Chapter competition. State competition is held in March at our school. The top four scorers in this competition from among the State Department schools all over the world earn the privilege to participate as members of the State Department team at the National Competition held in the U.S.in May.
Our school has participated in the contests for the past seven years with great success. Coaching sessions for Math Counts involve, discussing a variety of methods for solving problems; encouraging discussion so that students learn from each other; taking advantage of additional MATHCOUNTS coaching materials, such as previous years’ competitions to provide extra challenge or to prepare for the competition. Our school has sent three students to the Nationals in the past seven years.
